Online courses
Whether you are interested in learning how to code or acquiring the skills to land your dream job, Stanford professional education has the course for you. The content is a fusion of the latest Stanford grad school and research & development activities and is designed to test your mettle. The courses are designed to challenge your preconceived notions and make you think outside the box.
Stanford Continuing Studies offers a variety of courses that are available anytime, anywhere. A wide range of offerings includes professional and personal development courses, as well as courses in liberal arts and sciences. Stanford University’s teaching team uses the latest innovations to deliver a rich and engaging experience to students of all ages.
The course is made up of weekly video lectures, a handful of online meetings, and carefully selected readings. Some courses require a fair amount of time and/or money, while others offer an entirely online experience. Some courses even allow students to interact with their instructor by participating in online discussions through Canvas, the school’s online course management system.

Stanford Online offers a variety of educational opportunities including professional certificates, graduate courses, and academic degrees. The program is 100% virtual, with access to world-class faculty. The course format is flexible and allows students to work around their own schedules.
The department of Management Science and Engineering offers a wide range of professional education opportunities. Courses are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in entrepreneurship, management, and leadership. Faculty also offer important content in decision analysis, innovation, and technology.
Art studio
Designed to encourage intellectual and creative exploration, Stanford Continuing Studies offers an array of courses for adults of all ages. Courses in art, creative writing, and professional development are taught by Stanford faculty, curators, and other experts in their fields. Some of the courses are offered online, while others are available in-person on campus. Stanford Continuing Studies also hosts special programs and events.
A comprehensive course list is available online. Students can take classes from Stanford’s renowned faculty or participate in one- or two-week programs offered through the School of Humanities. Courses range from art history to foreign languages. In addition to classes, students can participate in workshops and field trips.
The Stanford Photography program focuses on visual literacy and experimental orientation. Students will be introduced to state-of-the-art equipment and the aesthetic potential of photography.
Visiting students
Visiting Student Researchers (VSR) are nonmatriculated graduate students who are engaged in research at Stanford University. They are eligible for graduate on-campus housing and participation in Graduate Life Office programs. However, they are not entitled to regular compensation or benefits from Stanford University.
To be a VSR, you must meet the criteria described in the Research Policy Handbook, and must be qualified to do research at a level comparable to other Stanford graduate students. You will also need to provide proof of comparable health insurance coverage before the term begins.
VSRs must be registered for a minimum of thirty days each quarter and for the entire duration of their appointment. The duration of their appointment is limited to one year. However, Stanford may revoke their status at any time.
Transcripts
Continuing Studies students are not required to submit an official transcript. However, it is a good idea to check with your instructor or director if you have any concerns about the confidentiality of your academic records.
There are two types of transcripts available from Stanford. One is an electronic version that is sent to your email inbox. The other is a hard copy that is mailed to your address. The fee for each is $10. If you are in a hurry, you can also request an emergency copy of your transcript by providing a letter from your instructor or director. If you are a summer session student, you can also request your transcript through the Document Ordering Portal.
Continuing Studies students are also eligible for a discount on textbooks. The fee will vary depending on the type of course you took.
